Does it have a stromberg carborator? Mine does and there is no idle cutoff. I was told that is the way they are designed to work. Like a car, you turn the key off to shut down.

Thanks John, I'm waiting to hear back to make sure it does have the Stromberg carb now.
I was thinking of fitting the gns430w under the dash but out of knee space. I was originally looking at the GPS, but the value of the gns430w with not only most of the same mapping functions, along with nav and second com within a lower price is quite appealing to me. I do remember the dash depth space to be quite limited. I'll talk with my tech about the options and space limitations more later.

Thanks Larry, it makes sense in this situation. I'll make sure it's the Stromberg carb!

As Larry said if the plane has the Stromberg carb you can't use the mixture to shut off the engine. That is different, and normal, from what you're used to with a 172.

Rather than a GNS 430 or 530 I'd look at the GPS175 family for a navigator. You may find space behind the panel at a premium. The AV20/30 would be a good combination. Depending on your generator/alternator situation you may find the electrical load calculation pushing the envelope as well. LED landing/taxi light can save some load in that regard.

The Stromberg carb has a completely different mixture setup from the Marvel. You CANNOT shut the engine down with the mixture. I just turn the mags to OFF. For a while I would close the valve to the carb and wait for it to run out of gas, but that takes a while and really doesn't accomplish anything. When you shut off the engine with the mag switch, you know the P leads are good! If for some reason a P lead breaks, You can close the fuel valve to stop the engine, it just takes a little time. After that, be aware that you have a mag that's hot all the time!
There was a guy at our airport that tried to shut sown his Ercoupe with the mag switch and it kept running. I'm assuming the fuel valve was stuck (many are) and he couldn't get it off. What to do? He got a buck of fuel and threw it into the intake so the it flooded the engine and it quit. Now THAT'S not dangerous at all! Ha! This is why it's IMPORTANT that the fuel valve be functional. I stop the engine with the mag switch but then I turn off the fuel. If for some reason the needle sticks in the carb you won't be dumping the header tank onto the hangar floor!

No idle cutoff? +new owner question was created by Aaron Huffman
Hey all, I'm planning to buy an Ercoupe 415-C soon and there's a slight hold up with a possible mechanical issue with the carberator not able to lean the mixture out enough to shut down the engine as of the normal shut down routine I'm used to from the Cessna 172 models I've flown. The current owner has always had this "no idle cutoff" symptom and has been flying it around as-is perfectly fine. I've searched a few different keywords to find a topic on this on the forum without luck.
Another thing I'm wondering about is since mosaic is coming very soon, should I go ahead and push to get it upgraded to an E model for the higher GW with the full elevator movement, thoughts?
It's setup as a great VFR plane right now, and I plan on flying it for a while as such, but I'm looking to get my mind regularly around IFR. I've been looking to get it kitted out properly for IFR and am wondering if there's some tips out there? I was looking at the uAvionix av-20+av-30 + gns430w or 530w.

I'm curious if this is a known issue or if anyone else has dealt with it?
